While the family of slain third grade teacher Sonia Perez committed her body to the ground Tuesday, 37-year-old Daniel Flores Lopez, the man accused of murdering the beloved educator, learned that he stands to lose his own life if convicted of the homicide.

Magistrate Patricia Hernandez charged Lopez with capital murder on the morning of April 5 at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito. Lopez, a resident of Rio Hondo since 2002, was read his rights and did not request bond.

Lopez was arrested Monday, culminating three such apprehensions in the case that began with the arrest of Sonia Perez’s husband, 40-year-old San Benito resident Julio Cesar Perez. The husband is being accused of orchestrating Sonia Perez’s death in an alleged murder for hire plot to reap the benefits of his wife’s life insurance, Cameron County Deputy Sheriff Gus Reyna reported. It was not clear as of presstime how much Sonia Perez’s life insurance was worth, nor was there any confirmation on the amount of money allegedly agreed upon to carry out the murder. However, a probable cause affidavit revealed that $1,300 was allegedly exchanged.
