helmetConcussions are a common injury in professional sports, but a growing trend in high school and sub-varsity athletics has state legislators taking greater precautions.

The state of Texas is considering new legislation in order to help safeguard high school athletes in response to a growing number of concussions in sports.

The legislation, Senate Bill 835 and House Bill 2038, was introduced by State Senator Bob Deuell and State Representative Four Price. The bills would establish a more clear-cut “return-to-play” protocol for athletes who have suffered concussions but are not rendered unconscious.

The legislation would coincide with the current state law, which states that any student athlete who becomes unconscious during any athletic activity, practice or game, may not return to the activity until being evaluated and cleared by a physician.
