After the New Year, many people can identify with the pains of attempting to shed excess weight, and Antonio Coronado’s story is no different.

Starting in July 2010, Coronado, a 55-year-old coach at Riverside Middle School, saw the need to get control of his weight before he contracted diabetes.

“The last three years I weighed up to 274 pounds,” Coronado said. “Well, being a health teacher it was kind of embarrassing teaching health and being that big.”

Born and raised in Brownsville, Coronado has been coaching for 25 years. He taught in the Brownsville school district for 14 years. After his mother passed away in 2000, he felt he needed a change of scenes. He found what he was looking for in San Benito.

“I came for one year and I loved it here, so this is my 11th year,” Coronado said. “They (San Benito Greyhounds) were known as a winning football team. I wanted to make a difference teaching middle school before they got to high school. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up staying here.”
