Saldañas share epic tale of romance, forbidden love

RIO HONDO – Romance, forbidden love, adversity, and triumph – the Saldañas’ tale is not unlike a movie one would see on the silver screen.

And if there was such a film chronicling the marriage of Santiago Saldaña, Sr., 88, and Maria Saldaña, 85, a happy ending could already be written.

Sixty-two years after they married, the Saldañas have not just lived happily and led prosperous lives in Rio Hondo, but have also contributed 43 people into the world. Santiago and Maria have six boys and one girl, 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. An argument can be made that they’ve started their own generation of people … hardworking and respectful.
