Sanchez swings!

Twelve-year-old Steven Sanchez, son of Erasmo and Guadalupe Sanchez of San Benito, was instrumental in helping the 29 Palms Junior Boys All-Stars make history by bringing the city of 29 Palms, Ca its first Boys Junior League California District 58 championship in the 13-14 year-old age division. Sanchez, known for his defensive skills, also lit up opposing pitchers by averaging .550 over 10 postseason games. He has also helped guide the 29 Palms Major Boys All-Stars to their first-ever Boys Major League District 58 championship game last year. (Courtesy photos)

She’s Got Spirit!

Alyssa Eileen Hernandez, 9, of San Benito came home with two national championship titles, one of which as the national extreme tumbling champion, after competing July 16-17 at the American Sport Championship tournament and again July 21 at the Cheer Power competition at South Padre Island. Having Fun at Sunny Glen

Members of the San Benito Fire Department visited with the children of the Sunny Glen Children’s home in San Benito on Monday, July 16. The firemen demonstrated their equipment, talked fire fighting techniques and inspired the children to consider firefighting as a career. One of the highlights of the day was when the McAllen based Air Evac Lifeteam crew flew their helicopter and landed it on the Sunny Glen campus to the cheers of the children. Sunny Glen Executive Director Ray Crowder said, “The men of the San Benito Fire Department and the flight crew of the Air Evac Lifeteam left our campus as modern day heroes in the eyes of the Sunny Glen children.” Pictured is Aiden, a resident of the home, with a San Benito firefighter operating a water hose.
