The San Benito Lady ’Hounds may not have been the victor at Friday’s game against the undefeated Weslaco Lady Panthers, but they didn’t go down without a fight.
Jav’ana Gonzales stood behind the basketball hoop Friday night, and the bandage covering her broken nose did nothing to hinder her voice as she encouraged her teammates during the pregame warm-ups.
At times, it was difficult to tell whether it was a basketball game or a track meet. Racing up and down the court, the Lady ’Hounds were white blurs as they blocked and stole to their hearts’ content. The first two points of the game were scored by Stephanie Castro. After Cejay Banuelos sank both shots of a two-point foul, however, the Lady Panthers retook the lead at 4:47 in the first and kept it before closing out the period with a score of 20-4.
The beginning of the second quarter saw the Lady ’Hounds down by 16 and anxious to get ahead. Banuelos scored the first two points of the quarter, quickly followed by Castro who scored the first three-pointer of the game. It is not enough, however, and as the buzzer signals the end of the first half, the Panthers were still up by 22 with a score of 34-12.
The Lady ’Hounds pushed and shoved for every point they earned in the third quarter. The Panthers, however, played defense and ran the clock out. As the buzzard sounded, the Lady ’Hounds scored only two points.
The game was heated in the fourth quarter. A daunting 29-point lead doesn’t faze the Lady ’Hounds. But late in the fourth quarter, fighting for rebounds, the Lady Panthers never relinquished their lead, and the Lady Hounds were defeated by a score of 53-16.
