A Customs Border Protection Office of Air and Marine helicopter, reportedly carrying U.S. Representative Filemon Vela and Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., was forced to make an emergency landing near a local elementary school on Thursday.
The helicopter’s pilot took precautionary measures after an emergency light indicated potential problems, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency in close proximity to La Paloma Elementary School.
“The helicopter landed far enough so that the students were never in any danger,” said San Benito CISD Superintendent Antonio G. Limón. “The school did temporarily go into lock down while a second helicopter landed to provide aid.”
The school district released the following statement regarding the incident: “A helicopter made an emergency landing next to La Paloma Elementary in San Benito. Principal Libby Flores reports that students and staff at the school were not affected as a result. Flores said La Paloma Elementary did not experience any disruptions to the instructional process during the incident in question.”
