Citizens of San Benito and the surrounding area who’ve recently inquired about the Fourth Annual San Benito News “Best Tamales in Town” contest will be pleased to hear that this year’s event is scheduled for 12 noon Friday, Dec. 21.
In its three previous years, the event has attracted upwards of 100 people to the News office, the site of the contest, and dozens of contestants, not to mention interest from the community.
Last year, SB Wings became the first participant to dethrone two-time contest winner Irma Gonzalez. SB Wings Owner Adolfo Toriz has already expressed interest in defending his tamale crown this year. After all, winning the contest means a year’s worth of bragging rights over a field of participants that includes citizens and local eateries.
“We’ll definitely be there participating once again,” Toriz said. “We’ve already been selling tamales for the last month, and taking orders. We’re eager to go up against all the grandmas in town and all those good cooks that are out there to see how we do this year.”
The winner enjoys a $100 gift certificate awarded by the News to a sponsoring business, not to mention an article published in the following issue (Dec. 23 weekend edition) featuring the individual or business as the winner. In the past, Gonzalez has said that she’s received dozens of orders for tamales following news of her success at previous contest.
As it has been the case in past events, entries will be judged by five individuals from throughout the area who serve the community in various capacities, dignitaries such as elected officials, local businesspersons and citizens.
The judges will be announced individually leading up to the event.
The tamale contest is open to the public. Contestants are only required to bring one dozen of their best tamales to the News office, located on 356 N. Sam Houston Blvd. in San Benito, by 12 noon Friday, Dec. 21. Judging will begin shortly thereafter and a winner will be announced once judges tally up their score sheets. Entries will be judged based on taste, texture, originality and presentation.
For more information on the contest, call (956) 399-2436.
