Juan PugaRIO HONDO – With what seemed like full-stadium jitters, the Rio Hondo Bobcats started off on the wrong foot during last night’s game against the Santa Rosa Warriors but ended on the right one.

The Bobcats were victorious in the end by a score of 27-13, but not before putting up with a solid Santa Rosa outing.

Scoring early in the first quarter with a 36-yard run, Santa Rosa kept ’Cats fans at the edge of their seats. Rio Hondo tied up the game quick; however, the Warriors fought back with an 86-yard touchdown pass. The game was close at 13-7 in favor of Santa Rosa.

Rolando Vega, running back and defensive end for the Bobcats, tied up the game toward the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Juan Puga sealed a solid lead with a 16-yard dash with a mere 47 seconds left on the clock, bringing the Bobcats up 19-13.

Head Coach Rocky James said, “We played terribly for the entire first half of the game tonight against the Warriors, and we did wonderfully for our comeback in the second half.”

“We’re playing a tough team this coming week, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln who lost their game tonight against PSJA Memorial,” James continued. “We need to work on running the ball offensively for this coming week’s game.”

Wide receiver and defensive back Gilberto Mendoza brought in a sweet interception securing the win for the Bobcats toward the end of the fourth quarter.

For football fanatics planning to head out to next week’s away game vs. the Huskies, it will be held on Thursday, September 6. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. at La Joya Coyote Stadium off of Expressway 83 in La Joya.
