LOS FRESNOS – Many San Benito fans traveled to La Joya Friday evening to watch their beloved San Benito Greyhounds in hopes of a lights out showing against Palmview.

Lights out is exactly what they got as a lighting malfunction caused the scrimmage to be called early following a 1-1 tie.

Greyhound fans may not be able to take much from the scrimmage; however, first year starting quarterback Jesse Jimenez was able to connect with wide receiver Manny Sanchez for a touchdown.

Now to begin the season, this despite not getting enough snaps in the team’s only scrimmage, the ’Hounds will face the rival Los Fresnos Falcons in what is promised to be an exciting week zero matchup, especially since we’re not used to seeing these two squads go at it until later in the year.

But that’s all changed now that San Benito and Los Fresnos are in different districts, 31-5A for the ’Hounds and 32-5A for the Falcs.

There’s no love lost in this contest as Head Coach Spencer Gantt said it was a must to face each other during the regular season to sharpen each other’s competitiveness and prepare for district play.

“I always try to schedule tough opponents before district play, I did it last year with Weslaco East, Flour Bluff and the Harlingen Cardinals, so I’m doing the exact same this year,” said Gantt.

Los Fresnos continues to compete in District 32-5A after the realignment and will look to add some pressure on this Greyhound squad. And the Falcons have some guns this year that are expected to be firing off points. Take, for instance, starting quarterback Jonmichael Rosales, a senior who us returning this season after a year’s experience as the playcaller for Los Fresnos.

The Falcon defense is also under new leadership as Mike Evans takes the helm as defensive coordinator. Evans was the secondary coach for the ’Hounds last year.

But Coach Gantt believes there is no need to feel any type of pressure in these early contests. “The only pressure on us is the pressure we put on ourselves,” said Gantt.

He went to say that he has high expectations for his team, but that those are the expectations they put forth on themselves rather than pundits.

Gantt has much to be hopeful for this season as they are coming off a bi-district championship and 32-5A co-championship from last season. San Benito has not accomplished that feat since 2004.

The contest is to be held in Los Fresnos at Leo Aguilar Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
