HoundsThe 14th Annual Dog Pound Invitational cross country meet was held this past Saturday. As the host of the tourney, the San Benito Greyhounds and Lady ’Hounds were looking to defend their turf and have a terrific outing.

And that they did. In fact, terrific may be an understatement for the result of the tourney. San Benito had first place runners in both boys’ and girls’ divisions of the meet.

For the boys, one word to describe the result will simply be historic. San Benito runner Rafael Duenes became the first Greyhound runner in the program’s history to win the boys portion of the Dog Pound invitational.

Duenes, who is in his senior season for the ’Hounds, has a promising season ahead of him after this win, which is sure to boost confidence in the veteran runner.

For the girls, one word for their result shall also suffice: Brenda. Winning the girls portion of the invitational was senior standout Brenda Lopez with a time of 12:01.

Lopez is coming off a historic season herself in her junior year, breaking school records in track for the 1600 meter and 3200 meter events.

Lopez was able to finish the race a full minute before the second place runner, which leads spectators to believe that Lopez’ outing is a sign of great things to come.

“She has exceptional goals to break valley records,” said Danny De La Rosa, head coach for the girls’ cross country and track programs. “We’ve had many great runners in San Benito, but Brenda has the potential to be not only the greatest out of San Benito, but possibly the Valley.”
