Dominant. That’s just about the only word that can be used to describe The San Benito Lady Hound JV volleyball team in a tune up scrimmage tournament this past Saturday.
In a tournament that featured Harlingen, Mercedes, and La Feria, the Lady Hounds were hardly tested.
Led by juniors Alyssa Escamilla and Natalie Martinez, San Benito blew by Harlingen in the first set. The Lady Hounds were clearly the more aggressive team, and Coach Lori Ann Garcia was visibly happy with the effort San Benito put forth. “We did show some good signs,” she said. “Hopefully we can carry this on to the regular season.”
Less than five minutes after disposing of the Lady Cards, the Lady Hounds kept their foot on the gas to put the smack down on La Feria. With Coach Garcia yelling instructions to the girls, San Benito put on a clinic of how to communicate during a game. Barley breaking a sweat, the Lady Hounds fought off La Feria for another win.
Not until the Mercedes Lady Tigers came up did San Benito face a challenge… but it didn’t last long. With the score still within reach halfway through the game, San Benito dug deep to run away with the win. What looked like a close game turned into another blowout victory for the Lady Hounds.
The team of Martinez, Ariana Agado, Ashley Arizpe, Ariana De Leon, Escamilla, Brandi Farias, Rebecca Hartman, Kassandra Lopez, Erica Montalvo, Destiny Sandoval and Jennifer Torres begin their season Aug. 14 against Harlingen North.
