Call this a story of love and patience, enduring hard times and drawing near to family. It’s not about the number 60, but what the 60-year wedding anniversary of Luciano and Maria Buenrostro represents.
It began in an old house in San Benito where two mothers visited over coffee to share chisme. Then known by her maiden name of Maria De La Luz, the 13-year-old was sent outside to chop firewood for the home on those visits and was often accompanied by a young man, 17-year-old Luciano. They talked and played, and one day Luciano said, “Vamanos.” He told his young love to stop chopping the wood, “I’m going to chop firewood for you now,” and that very moment they eloped. The date was August 2, 1952.
What started off as a spontaneous marriage quickly became real work. Maria could not cook or provide for a family, but her mother-in-law took her in and began to show her “womanhood.”
