waterCity of San Benito officials said Monday that a letter recently mailed to citizens misinformed the public of water samples containing bacteria.

In the letter, the city’s water department informed customers of an MCL coliform violation, stating, “Two water samples during June 2012 contained coliform bacteria.” It’s bacteria that is used as an indicator that other potentially harmful bacteria may be present, the letter reads. Health departments in multiple states have also considered the bacterium evidence of human fecal contamination in water supplies; although, it can be naturally present in the environment as well.
