Following a long and arduous battle with stage IV colon cancer, Guadalupe Ayala, a 23-year veteran of the San Benito Police Department, recently opted to retire after city officials requested that he prove his fitness for duty.

Previously, Ayala said he was doubtful that doctors would clear him for duty being that he’s still recovering after enduring surgery and excruciating chemotherapy treatment.

“Thank you for the opportunity that I have been given these past 23 years in serving the great community of San Benito,” Ayala stated in a letter addressed to the City of San Benito and San Benito Police Department.
