It’s back.
The San Benito Chamber of Commerce Kids Fishing Tournament returns in 2012 for its eighth annual event of food, fun and, of course, fish.
Designed as a family-oriented tournament encouraging the strengthening of bonds between parents and their children, the event has, for the better part of a decade, attracted thousands of participants and spectators to its scenic locale: the Heavin Resaca Trail, which is near Business 77 and Bowie Street in the heart of San Benito, Texas.
As is the case every year, first, second and third place prizes are awarded, gifts are given away, and the thrill of competition is prevalent.
This year, children ages 4-15 may participate, free of charge, in three age divisions: 4-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds and 13-15 year olds. Three winners will be named, based on total weight of their catch, in each division. The child with the biggest catch in weight of all divisions will be the recipient of a grand prize pontoon and named Grand Champion Angler of the tournament.
Scheduled from 4-7:30 p.m., the competition adheres to the rules and regulations of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Free fishing rods and reels will be given away at 3:30 p.m. to the first 200 kids who arrive. To register, call San Benito Chamber of Commerce President Zeke Padilla at (956) 399-5321 or visit the Chamber office at 400 N. Travis St. in San Benito.
Sponsors donating prizes for the giveaways include Walmart, HEB and Las Huellas.
