Joe Kitterman said he wants today’s youth to pick up a fishing rod instead of a videogame controller.

He’s going to get his wish come June 23, the date of the 2012 San Benito Chamber of Commerce Kids Fishing Tournament.

Kitterman is a member of the Las Huellas Board of Directors and recently presented Zeke Padilla, president of the Chamber of Commerce, with 200 rods and reels, which will be given away to the first of as many participants in the annual tournament.

The rods were donated by Las Huellas, a nonprofit organization that serves the South Texas area.

“We just support the youth and women in the outdoors and for outdoor activities that involve families and to try to get kids away from video games and get them outside,” Kitterman said.

Specifically, and according to the Las Huellas website, the organization serves as an advocate for the benefit of South Texas Wildlife and “for the rights of South Texas wildlife managers, landowners and sportsman in educational and wildlife habitat-related arenas.”

“Las Huellas is dedicated to educating all persons, especially the youth of South Texas, about the conservation, management, and enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitat to ensure the preservation of our cherished resources for future generations.”

Also serving on the Las Huellas Board of Directors are Emmet Wells, president; Lou Powell, vice president; Rob Cackley, secretary; Brad Wolfe, Ed Marshall, Edward Mathers, Russell Adams, Joe Touchet and Ricardo Adobatti.
