The San Benito Greyhounds’ feared defense had consecutive stops in the first half, including one showing that saw the ’Hounds (4-1 in district) strip the ball from the Brownsville Lopez Lobos and run it back the other way.
The Hounds’ unrelenting efforts are what resulted in a 42-23 victory against the Lobos Friday night.
Lopez scored the first touchdown; one that was soon answered, however, by San Benito quarterback Jacob Puente. San Benito, now up 7-6 and with just 3:21 minutes left on the clock from the first quarter, wasted no time in getting the ball back into the Lobos’ territory.
San Benito’s defense, in the meantime, continued to penetrate Lopez’s offensive, which had come out ready to play.
Still, by the second quarter, Lopez managed a short-lived two-point lead of 9-7. Working around the clock on the defense were Rene Chavez and Enrique Rodriguez, who assisted in stopping the Lobos dead in their tracks as well as driving the Lopez offense back a few yards.
Despite a few penalties called against San Benito, the ’Hounds continued to keep the momentum going. With just a 1:44 time frame wavering on the scoreboard, Puente bolted for 62 yards to bring up the score to 14-9. Following Puente’s lead, running back Arturo Coronado then contributed to ending the second quarter at 21-9.
The ’Hounds, now eager for more yardage, put Puente to the task of seeing to it that the ’Hounds maintain a leg up in the game. Puente, with two touchdowns in the third quarter, certainly rose to the occasion and then some. Ending the third quarter on a sweet note, linebacker Jamail Garza plucked the ball from an unsuspecting Lobo and made a run for the endzone to bring the ’Hounds up, 42-9.
Although the ’Hounds left a few holes open for the Lobos to slip through in the fourth quarter, San Benito’s speed worked in their favor as they proceeded to the final minutes of the game and ended with yet another victory under their belt.
Despite a steady game played by the Greyhounds, Head Coach Spencer Gantt expressed his priorities going into next week’s contest.
“We have to work on everything, every week. We got to get better at everything,” said Gantt.
San Benito will face off against Brownsville Porter Oct. 28. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Greyhounds have a chance to go three rounds in he playoffs if when they are on defense they play with a mental attitude of Dick Butkus and when on offense like Barry Sanders. Have fun ! and Go Greyhounds!.
