A San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy (VMA) student was found Thursday after going missing from the campus, according to San Benito CISD officials.
Initial reports indicated that the student, described as a 15-year-old male, was last seen at approximately 3 p.m. running into some brush located just north of the school; this before he was found after 5 p.m. nearly a mile away at the San Benito Police Department (SBPD) shooting range.
The search intensified when, citing concern for the student’s safety due to the heat, authorities with the SBPD, Border Patrol, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) aided in the effort. San Benito CISD Police Chief Santiago R. Garcia said DPS utilized a helicopter in the search.
Superintendent Antonio G. Limón said the incident occurred while the student was being taken home by school personnel, specifically an assistant principal and a police officer. When getting into a car, the teen allegedly “made a run for it,” Limón said.
According to the superintendent, the parents had been notified that their son was allegedly disruptive and requested that he be taken home; however, the parents – at the time – had no way of traveling to VMA to pick him up.
“We usually do not take children home, but this was a special exception yesterday because he was very much out of control,” Limón said Friday.
Attempts by the News to contact the student’s parents were unsuccessful as of presstime.
