San Benito police seized about 15 kilos of cocaine Thursday afternoon as the result of a routine traffic stop.
It was at approximately 4:50 p.m. Thursday when San Benito Police Officer Rogelio Banda pulled over a black four-door Oldsmobile, which was traveling northbound on Expressway 77/83, for not having a front license plate.
According to Banda, the driver of the vehicle exited the expressway and turned onto the 500 block of Reagan, and that’s when he reportedly fled on foot.
“The driver, described as a male subject wearing a black shirt, blue jeans with a shaved head, ran into the neighborhood at the 500 block of South Reagan Street,” read a police press release. “(Banda) pursued the subject but was unable to locate the driver.”
Banda then returned to the vehicle and found 15 bundles of cocaine in the trunk of the car. It was at that point that the vehicle and cocaine were relinquished to the San Benito Police Department (SBPD) Special Investigation Unit.
Carlos Romero of the SI unit said each bundle has a street value of $19,500, making it a $292,500 bust.
The driver of the Oldsmobile, however, has continued to elude police.
“As of right now, on the suspect, it’s still an ongoing investigation,” Romero said.
Those with information that may lead to his arrest are encouraged to call the SBPD at (956) 361-3880; anonymity will be upheld.
