Three San Benito teens were jailed recently for allegedly burglarizing at least five vehicles at the Gillman car dealership.
Detective Arturo Flores of the San Benito Police Department (SBPD) said approximately $1,500 worth of items were taken from the vehicles in question on the night of Aug. 16. Five car stereos valued at approximately $300 apiece were among the items stolen.
Luis Campos, 19, of San Benito was arrested in connection with the crime the night of the burglary. Then, on the strength of witness reports and further investigation, Flores said 17-year-old Josue Martinez and a 16-year-old juvenile were also arrested.
The juvenile was transported to the Darrell Hester Juvenile Justice Center in San Benito while Martinez and Campos each face a total of five counts of burglary of a motor vehicle. Their individual bonds were set at $2,500.
“We’ve had prior dealings with them for burglary. This time they got together, picked a particular night and decided to go on a little spree,” said SBPD Lieutenant Martin Morales. “They went out on a little rampage that night on vehicle burglaries.”
Specifically, Flores said the juveniles busted windshields to gain entry to the vehicles; and although the detective and lieutenant both expressed belief that they may be responsible for other motor vehicle burglaries, evidence of such has been lacking.
“We could only prove five, but a lot of that has to do with victims not coming forward,” Flores said.
In an unrelated case, Flores also reported recovering approximately $3,500 worth of stolen property. The items in question included flat screen televisions from Flexi Compras in San Benito, where the burglary took place, as well as a laptop. Flores said warrants have been issued for the three suspects believed to be responsible.
