Lacks celebrates grand opening in San Benito

Lacks pic2Lacks Home Furnishings held a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday to commemorate the grand opening of their new store in San Benito.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was held outside the furniture store, located on 1000 W Bus. Hwy. 77, on Friday, July 1. The event saw a sea of purple shirts worn by the Lacks employees with various city officials and the general public, not to mention members of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce and the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I want to give you a very warm welcome to the city of San Benito, the Resaca City,” said Mayor Joe H. Hernandez during the ceremony. “May you prosper and God bless you.”

Also speaking was Bill Weekly, whose father Chuck Weekly originally founded Whalen’s and served as mayor in San Benito. Bill described said when he saw his reflection in the mirror with the purple Lacks shirt on, he immediately thought of his San Benito High School alma mater and immediately felt energized.

“We are fortunate, and the city of San Benito, to have Lacks come over here,” said Weekly. “We’re here to serve the community and provide the best quality products.”

Lacks pic4Weekly approached Lacks, which 11 other stores in the South Texas region, in September of last year, and finalized a deal in November to open the furniture store in the Resaca City. Since then, the building has undergone extensive renovations.

“We have made many improvements to the San Benito store over the past several months,” said Moffitt. “I think visitors will really like what they see.”

New additions include a coffee bar, all new appliance and electronics departments, and an adjoining clearance center. The store will also feature new furniture vignetting and carpeting.

The store’s exterior has an updated look with new landscaping and a more modern, up-to-date color scheme.

“We are introducing brands to the store which are new to the San Benito market,” said upholstery buyer Carl Little.

The opening of the Lacks store in San Benito comes less than two months after the company opened its 11th store in Alice on May 19.

Lacks Valley Stores (www.lacksvalley.com) ranks 65th in the top 100 retail furniture operations in the U.S., according to Furniture Today. The company has over 700 employees.

The stores are located on the Texas border from Laredo to Port Isabel, including locations in Brownsville, Harlingen, Edinburg, Pharr, McAllen, Mission and Rio Grande City.

The company has been in business since 1935.
