Let freedom ring… to pop fireworks.
A recent county-wide burn ban has temporarily been lifted in the wake of recent showers.
“I know that they are going to be able to do their fireworks, but it has been lifted temporarily depending on how much it rains, in which case it will be lifted longer,” said San Benito Fire Marshal Henry Lopez.
While the news of the burn ban lift will surely be music (or bangs) to the ears of many who enjoy popping fireworks, it still doesn’t change the fact that aerial fireworks will remain prohibited for the time being.
“Don’t shoot off any bottle rockets and things that are projectiles that will leave a hot ember coming back down that could land on the roof,” said Lopez. “Also use caution when using fireworks. Always have water nearby and don’t use them near tall grassy areas and not close to homes as well. Use fireworks that are permitted. Don’t cause any problems to yourself or to your neighbors.”
Still, Lopez emphasized that any projectile fireworks, particularly bottle rockets, remain prohibited despite the recent rain.
“The ones that have projectiles, like the bottle rockets that have a stick and a cartridge as they come back down, those are prohibited,” said Lopez. “I don’t think the ones that shoot the balls in the air and explode. I don’t think those are prohibited.”
Those igniting prohibited fireworks could receive a fine of up to $500 or more.
