ResacaFest logoResacaFest will be held Sunday, July 3 at the Heavin Resaca Trail to commemorate America’s independence.

Oh, and it will also be a celebration of the City of San Benito’s 100th year as a municipality.

The City of San Benito celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the naming of the city in 2007. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the city’s government.

“It’s going to be very important because we are not only celebrating the ResacaFest, we are also celebrating the centennial, 100 years of the city,” said Mayor Joe H. Hernandez. “On July 3, we’ll be reading a proclamation, proclaiming 100 years of city government. And then, of course, we’re going to have the Fourth of July.”

ResacaFest will have many activities for the whole family to enjoy, including a “Patriotic Dog/Owner look-alike Contest” as well as a bike race, a flag raising ceremony, Zumba and the “Show and Shine” car show not to mention numerous food vendors and music acts.

“I think it’s very important for people to remember what the Fourth of July really stands for,” said Hernandez. “Of course, we’ll be having music and everything that a person could ask for. We will have all kinds of stands there, as far as food and drinks.”

Also on tap on the Fourth of July is the dedication of the San Benito Veteran’s War Memorial, something which has long been in the works.

“On the Fourth of July, we will be having the dedication of the Veterans War Memorial in the city. It’s a must for anybody that has lost a loved one in the war,” Hernandez said. “It pertains to the whole Valley, not only San Benito. Anybody who served in the military during a war, I think it’s very important for them. It’s a beautiful memorial, a jewel within the city. I think everyone should be a part of it. It belongs to everybody.”

With so many events going on this weekend not only in San Benito, but all across the Valley to help celebrate Independence Day, Hernandez explained what sets the ResacaFest apart.

“What makes it unique is that the Resaca goes through the heart of the city. There is no other city that has a Resaca that goes through the heart of the city. This event is along the Resaca banks, and that makes it unique,” Hernandez said. “It brings people into the community. People who come into the community spend money. It’s a win-win for everybody.”
