A tropical wave moving toward Mexico is projected to bring significant showers to the Cameron County area, according to meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville.
Ryan Vipond, a meteorologist with the Brownsville NWS, said a 50 percent chance of rain is forecast on Wednesday going into Thursday, this as a result of a tropical wave that, as of presstime, was traveling five to 10 mph in a west, north westwardly direction toward the Tamaulipas and Veracruz, Mexico area. The wave initially made its way through the Bay of Campeche before it was expected to become a tropical depression late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
“We should see a decent, good chance of rain kind of equated to something we saw similar to last week. In fact it’ll be right on through to early Friday,” Vipond said. “Once we get beyond that wave moving inland Mexico, rain chances will dwindle into the weekend.”
Although the National Hurricane Center recently estimated a 70 percent probability that the wave could develop into a tropical depression, Vipond said there is no cause for concern.
“It will not be a major event,” he said. “Through the end of the week, around Saturday, we’ll receive anywhere from one to three inches (of rain). And that’s a guesstimate at this point.”
