A week has passed since it was first reported that one of San Benito’s finest had discovered that, after battling cancer in 2008, a recent checkup showed that it had returned.

San Benito Police Officer Guadalupe Ayala was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, affecting his stomach and his liver. And while Ayala just completed his first of eight weeks of chemotherapy, his wife, Lisa Ayala, said everything appears to be going smoothly thus far.

“It went very well. He was able to handle it well. He’s just feeling a little bit tired lately,” said Lisa about her husband’s first week of chemo. When asked if she felt optimistic about her husband’s chemotherapy treatment, she said, “Yes, especially when we met with MD Anderson. They were really positive about the treatment plan. They said that since he was in good health, then he should be able to respond very well to the treatment.”

According to Lisa, Officer Ayala is scheduled for six months of chemotherapy. He will be receiving the treatment every other week. Being that he just received treatment on Monday, he won’t receive it again until the following Monday, July 4.

After his story was published in the News last week, the Ayala family has received an outpouring of support from members of the community, according to Lisa.

“We’ve had a lot of people contact us. Also there was an increase in sales of tickets for his fundraiser,” said Lisa about the benefit being held by her husband’s fellow brothers in blue.

The chicken plate benefit will be held Saturday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kennedy Park by the Heavin Resaca Trail. The plates will include chicken quarter legs, sausage, rice and beans, bread and drinks and cost $6 each.

Those wishing to do more to help the Ayala family is asked to call Lisa at (956) 241-4942.
