Resaca Fest is scheduled for Sunday, July 3, and it is looking to be another fun-filled event for the whole family.
“We scheduled the event on Sunday this year because of all the other events that will be going on that weekend, and also for the people leaving, so we figured that July 3 would be nice,” said Victor Rosas, chair of the Special Events Board.
The event is set to start at 12 p.m. with a dog show as the event is expected to have a number of bands, shows, rides, and venders.
“We’ll have music on both sides of the Resaca. One side at the amphitheater is all high school kids, sixties and seventies music, stuff like that,” said Rosas. “On the opposite side we’ll have Tejano music. That’s on the Kennedy side. They will both be going on at the same time, but the Tejano music will probably go on until 11:30 p.m. The kids will play until about 8 p.m.”
According to Rosas, the Special Events Boards has already spent over $6,000 on rides for the kids.
“It’s all free for the kids. Also, we have a car show. We’re going to put little bags on the cars for people to vote on. The car that has the most votes will win. It’s just a regular car show, nothing specific, no fifties or sixties, just what people like, people’s choice,” Rosas said.
Anyone interested in entering the dog show must sign up before the show begins. It will be free of charge, but there will be a few requirements.
“We have five trophies and five baskets donated by a veterinarian. For that, you have to dress up for the Fourth of July with your dog, and we will parade you from one side of the amphitheater to the Kennedy side and then they’ll decide,” said Rosas. “In order to compete, you need to be dressed alike or for the Fourth of July celebration.”
“We’ll have vendors on both sides of the event,” continued Rosas. “On the Kennedy side we’ll have a beer garden. It’s going to be barricaded, that’s the only area where you will be allowed to drink beer and enjoy the music. The fireworks are at 9:30 p.m. or 9:45 p.m. We asked permission from the city (for the beer garden) and we got an enclosed area, that way we can have the kids on one side, and the folks who just want to enjoy a couple of beers and enjoy the music on the other side.”
Rosas said that the Special Events Board has been planning Resaca Fest for approximately three to four months. They plan to have spent approximately $30,000 on the event by the time all is said and done.
“We were a little short when they developed the Special Events Board, so what they did is they approached the people who were doing the Resaca Fest for the past three years,” said Rosas, referring to the Resaca Fest Committee who were the 2010 San Benito News Citizens of the Year. “Some of their people took charge and filed chairmen. I would say that the Resaca Fest Committee consists of about eight people, and we have approximately 10 to 20 people chairmen. They all volunteered.”
