In this case, an exception was made for Cowboy fans in the area to host Washington Redskins Safety Chris Horton, who visited Miller Jordan Middle School on Friday to help teach the importance of healthy nutrition, exercise and education.

It was all part of the NFL (National Football League) Play 60 campaign.

“It’s all about encouraging the kids to do physical activities and eat a nutritional diet,” said Horton while at the historic Greyhound Stadium. “This is my first time in the Valley. I don’t think I’ve ever been this far south. I’m really enjoying it.”

Horton spent the day at Miller Jordan where he received a key to the city from Mayor Joe H. Hernandez as well as making classroom visits throughout the day.

“I was welcomed with open arms,” said Horton of his visit to San Benito. “I can see myself coming back someday. The people and the kids here are great.”

Horton, who played football for UCLA, emphasized the importance of an education, especially for athletes who hope to take their game to the next level.

“It’s all about education. You don’t get to where I am if you don’t take care of your academics,” Horton said. “You need to go through high school and go to college if you want to be a professional athlete. School comes first.”
