Representatives from WAG (We Are Graduating) visited the Darrell Hester Juvenile Detention Center in San Benito on Thursday to make some big announcements.
WAG has selected Cameron County for its 2011 Youth Summit, which will be held at the San Benito Boys and Girls Club, Cameron Park, as well as at six locations in Brownsville.
“WAG is a national, non-profit organization. Each year during the summer, through their funding sources, they select sites where they run a complete summer youth program,” said Tommy Ramirez. “Basically, we convinced them to adopt us for the summer program.”
Among those in attendance were WAG Founder Bruce Carter and Roselyn Garcia, the South Texas Area Representative.
“They bring in all the local staff to run the program, and they bring in academic activities, recreational activities, nutritional activities, they feed all the kids breakfast, lunch and supper,” Ramirez said. “They run the program Monday through Friday from 6:30 in the morning to 6:30 at night.”
