ElectionsToday is the big day.

After months of campaigning, voters will finally know if their candidates will be taking a seat on the San Benito city commission or school board.

Local voters have already made a statement by breaking the recent municipal early voting record with 1,271 ballets cast, exceeding the 2008 record of 1,132.

The San Benito CISD elections brought out 1,349 early voters from May 2 to May 10.

The city elections have been full of intrigue and hotly anticipated races including Mayor Jack Garcia versus former Mayor Joe Hernandez. The Place 1 City Commission race is made up of incumbent Tony Gonzales and challengers Joe F. Rodriguez and Roel Villafranco. The Pl. 2 race features incumbent Rene Villafranco against Gavino Sotelo.

The school board races are just as competitive as Pl. 6 incumbent and school board president Oscar Medrano is facing challenger Fatima Huerta. Pl. 4 incumbent Joe G. Gonzalez is being challenged by June Aguilera, and Pl. 7 incumbent Manuel “Meme” Gonzales, Jr. is up against Julian Huerta.
