SAN ANTONIO – The San Benito Greyhound football team has a logo embroidered on the players’ jerseys that means anytime, anywhere, anyplace. After the Lady ’Hound softball team raced past the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks Friday night at the San Antonio Northside Complex, that logo should definitely be embroidered on the Lady ’Hounds’ jerseys.
Whether it be at Lady ’Hounds Stadium, in Harlingen, or at San Antonio Northside Complex, the Lady ’Hounds have defeated their opponents anytime, anywhere, and anyplace. They merely proved it again against Eagle Pass Winn, taking home an area championship and advancing to the third round of the playoffs, winning in a 17-0 shellacking no less.
With their legion of fans behind them, who head coach Elias Martinez refers to as “fantastic fans,” the Lady ’Hounds are bringing home the victory and making it through another week of 5A state playoffs.
The Lady ’Hounds soared over the Lady Mavericks with a score 17-0 after five innings of play. The Lady ’Hound sluggers were lead by Jackie Elizondo, Kassandra Contreras, and Mel Ramirez; all went three for four at the plate while KC Sanchez left her mark in San Antonio as she parked a three-run homer way over the fence. Freshman ace Amber Jasso continued to do her thing as she sent 12 Lady Mavericks home with strikeouts.
The victory comes as no surprise as the Lady ’Hounds thrive off the playoff experience. Martinez has even renamed the playoff season “Lady ’Hound Time.” After a tough sweep against Harlingen, the Lady ’Hounds showed their colors as they excelled in one game.
“We’re having a great time with each other. It’s our time. Playoffs are Lady ’Hound time. We’re either going to go hard or whatever happens, happens; but we’re always going to leave it all on the field,” said Martinez.
The coach also said Friday’s game was better on his heart after last week’s nail biter had him a little spooked.
The Lady ’Hounds will continue their quest through the 5A playoffs with their challenger yet to be determined as Edinburg North and Sharyland are set to play game three of their series Saturday.
