Almost like clockwork, right around the time the UIL releases their yearly High School football schedules; former Alumni from both San Benito High and Harlingen High begin eagerly texting or calling anybody who they think might have taken a glance at the schedule. From those die-hard fans that have held season-tickets for decades, to former players who now have children playing in the game themselves, to even those who have graduated and moved away but still keep-up with the “Battle” through social media, virtually any and everyone that has ever come out of this town knows just how important this game is and always has been.
Yes, the Battle of the Arroyo has been a historically lopsided event, with Harlingen holding a dominating 58-21-5 record, however most of those wins came decades ago when the entire talent pool of Harlingen was being funneled into one school. “Back then, they were the team to beat in the whole Valley,” said 1977 graduate Chris Rojas, who was a 2-way starter for the ‘Hounds back then. “It didn’t matter if we lost eight or nine games, if we beat the Cardinals, everybody looked at it as a successful season.”

One of which two cities, San Benito and Harlingen, compete for bragging rights over the territory, which acts as a boundary between the two rival schools. The time has come for the Greyhounds (3-2, 1-1) to face the Cardinals (2-0, 4-1) in the 2015 edition of the Battle of the Arroyo.
