The San Benito Boys and Girls Club has been a pillar of the community for decades, helping to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Opening their doors from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. for their summer program and 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. during their afterschool program, the Club is almost a necessity for many parents who work during those hours. With activities such as air hockey, dodge ball, and arts and crafts, the club has long been an ideal spot for the youth of the community to interact with other children their age, while at the same time staying active.
So why is it that this once beloved club is now fading away with hardly enough funds to continue monthly operations? According to program director Veronica Rogers, it comes down to two major problems: Not enough financial support from the City and not enough urgency from the community to force the City’s hand.
