NEWS Staff Report
San Benito News Managing Editor Michael Rodriguez, in conjunction with the San Benito Public Library, will begin hosting weekly meetings at the library as part of a Community Writer’s Club.
According to Rodriguez, the concept behind the club is to encourage aspiring writers to hone their potential by implementing a number of exercises aimed at increasing confidence, stressing fluidity, and strengthening structure.
“Much of the concepts we plan to utilize will focus primarily on what some may call ‘unorthodox’ writing styles. Of course, basic grammar, punctuation and spelling will not be compromised as a result. Creativity will, however, be at the forefront of our meetings,” Rodriguez said. “I want to hear more about people’s experiences when they put pen to paper, to be conversational in their work rather than robotic. Sometimes, writers will become so dependent on following the rules that they’ll lose the reader. The goal here is to create a community of writers who are more in tap with their passions. Only then can one grow in their field.”
Although his background is in the field of journalism, Rodriguez said those seeking guidance in nearly every form of writing will benefit.
“Using the library as a focal point for expanding literacy and having fun at the same time is a great idea,” said Gerardo “Gerry” Salazar, director of the San Benito Public Library.
Club meetings will be held at no charge inside the library meeting room, located on 101 W. Rose St. in San Benito, every Thursday beginning May 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
The public is invited to participate as library membership is not required to attend. For more information, call Rodriguez at (956) 399-2436.
