Juanita Mathis

San Benito, TX – Juanita Mathis, 89, passed away on April 2, 2011 at Harlingen Nursing Center.

Born to Lona (called Lonie) and Frank Mathis in Briggsville, Arkansas on Sept. 8, 1921.

In the early 1930s the family moved to San Benito.

Shortly after graduation from high school in San Benito, Juanita went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone company at their switchboard office in San Benito. She was one of the operators with the pleasant voice that would ask “What number please?” and connect you.

After the office in San Benito closed, she worked at the telephone business office in Harlingen until she retired.

Relatives and friends all enjoyed her company becuase she always had a smile and never said a harsh word about anyone. She always looked for the best in people.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George Frank Mathis.

She is survived by her niece Lona Machelle Mathis and Lona’s son Brandon.

She is also survived by Jacky Hanshaw who regarded Juanita more as an older sister than a cousin.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito. Services are under the direction of Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie San Benito. 399-9992.
