LOS FRESNOS, TX —Local school board trustees unanimously appointed Jimmy McDonough as interim superintendent during its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 8, as the district continues its search for a new permanent superintendent.

McDonough, who currently serves as Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District (LFCISD) Deputy Superintendent for Student Services and Principal Support, will assume the role on July 2, 2026, after the retirement of LFCISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gonzalo Salazar.

According to a LFCISD press release, upon completion of the superintendent search and selection of a permanent superintendent, McDonough will return to his current role as deputy superintendent.

The board expressed its sincere appreciation to McDonough for his willingness to accept the interim appointment and provide continuity during this important transition for the district.

“The board is grateful to Mr. McDonough for stepping into this role and providing steady leadership during the superintendent search process,” said LFCISD Board President Donald Henderson.

“His experience, commitment to our students, and deep understanding of our district make him uniquely qualified to lead Los Fresnos CISD during this transition. We are fortunate to have a leader of his caliber willing to serve in this capacity,” Henderson added.

McDonough brings more than three decades of experience in public education and more than 20 years of service to Los Fresnos CISD, according to the press release.

Throughout his career, he has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, director, executive director, and deputy superintendent.

His leadership journey within the district includes serving as Assistant Principal at Los Fresnos High School, Principal of Resaca Middle School, Principal of Los Fresnos United, Director of Special Services, Executive Director of Academics, and, most recently, Deputy Superintendent.

Known throughout the district and community for his student-centered approach and collaborative leadership, McDonough has played an instrumental role in supporting campuses, strengthening district operations, and advancing initiatives that benefit students and families across Los Fresnos CISD, according to the district’s statement.

“I am honored by the Board of Trustees’ confidence in me and grateful for the opportunity to serve our district in this role,” McDonough said. “Los Fresnos CISD has always been a special place, and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, students, families, and community.”

The appointment follows Dr. Salazar’s retirement announcement in April after 20 years of service as superintendent and more than three decades in public service.
