As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War, the Mexican American Museum of Texas (TMAMT) is planning a series of events to highlight the role of Spanish Texas and to honor local family heritage.

Gustavo Noel Hinojosa, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), and a San Benito native now living in Dallas, said that TMAMT currently has two public-facing events scheduled, beginning with a preview of its upcoming exhibit, “Spanish Texas during the American Revolution: Life & Legacy, 1775–1783,” on May 23 at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in downtown Dallas.

The full exhibit is expected to open later this summer at the Heritage Museum of Houston, with a date anticipated in late July or early August.

The exhibit explores life in Spanish Texas during the Revolutionary era, including references to what is now South Texas, historically known as the Escandón Villas del Norte.

Among the figures highlighted is Doña Rosa María Hinojosa de Ballí, recognized as one of the region’s earliest ranching pioneers and often called the first “cattle queen.”

Hinojosa said the exhibit remains in development, with display boards being finalized. Once complete, it will feature period clothing, historical artifacts, and a full-scale longhorn piñata named “Don Fernando.”

In addition to the public exhibit, the Hinojosa family is planning a personal tribute later this year, tentatively scheduled for September or October.

“We will place SAR medallions on the graves of our father, Raul Hinojosa, and our grandfather, Emilio Vicente Hinojosa, recognizing them as descendants of our patriot ancestor, José Manuel Ynojosa,” Hinojosa said.

Additional details, including finalized dates and exhibit materials, are expected to be released as planning continues.
