After concrete pieces were observed breaking off the base of a bridge at a resaca crossing near Corral Street and frontage road, residents raised concerns, prompting an inspection and a response from state transportation officials, who say the structure remains safe.
Cristina Garcia, Communications Director for the City of San Benito, said the City received inquiries from motorists about the condition of the roadway and bridge along the frontage road and notified the Texas Department of Transportation, which oversees and maintains the structure as part of the state highway system.
TxDOT Public Information Officer Ray Pedraza confirmed that the bridge was inspected and found not to be a safety hazard.
A routine inspection of the structure was completed in March 2025, and the observed issues were limited to the concrete surface, Pedraza said.
“Only surface issues (were noted),” Pedraza said. “The bridge is safe for motorists and pedestrians.”
Pedraza said the agency is addressing the deterioration through ongoing maintenance work.
“Surface repairs are currently being addressed,” he said.
Officials also addressed questions about debris visible in the water beneath the crossing. Pedraza said safety measures are in place during repair work to minimize environmental impact, and that any material that has fallen into the resaca will be removed as part of maintenance.
Garcia said TxDOT advised the City that the roadway did not require closure and that the structure remains fully operational while repairs are completed under the state’s regular maintenance schedule.
The Texas Department of Transportation encourages residents who observe roadway concerns to report them to the agency or to the City of San Benito, which can forward the information to the appropriate state officials.
Officials believe that the cause of the slabs separating from their base was erosion and a shifting landscape due to the site’s proximity to the resaca.
