Several San Benito High School male and female wrestlers are competing in the state tournament in Cypress, near Houston, this week.

To qualify for the state tournament, all SBHS wrestlers first competed in the District 16-6A Tournament in January, then in the regional tournament in Austin last week.

Three girls competed in the Region 4 Tournament in Austin. Included was Evelyn Balderas, who placed third in the 115-pound category. She was the only state qualifier.

Savannah Ramirez (sixth place, 105 pounds) and Katelyn Rodriguez (sixth place, 170 pounds) wrestled at the regional tournament but didn’t place in the top three.

On the boys’ side during the District 16-6A Tournament, two SBHS wrestlers won an individual district title. They were Brandon Salinas in the 215-pound class and Damien Hernandez in the 120-pound class.

Other medalists were second-place finisher Humberto Garcia (165 pounds) and third-place finisher Julian Sauceda (285 pounds).

All of these wrestlers also qualified for the regional tournament, with Salinas placing third and Hernandez fifth, respectively. They advanced to state, with Hernandez as an alternate.

A send-off for wrestlers from both teams was held on Thursday morning outside the Greyhound Sports Complex.
