The San Benito Lady Greyhounds secured their third win on the hardwood in District 32-6A play Tuesday, defeating the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles.

The victory over Hanna, which is winless in district play, improved San Benito’s district record to 3-2 and put it in second place behind the Harlingen Lady Cardinals, who are 5-0.

“We picked up our third win tonight; our girls didn’t play like we thought we could,” San Benito Head Coach Abel Moreno said. “We still had a solid win.”

Harlingen defeated San Benito in an away game last week, 58-34.

The Lady ‘Hounds will begin a tough three-game stretch Friday with an away game against the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons (2-2). SBHS will try to defeat Los Fresnos for the second time in district play.

“We are looking forward to finishing strong these last three games in hopes of rolling into the playoffs with momentum,” Coach Moreno said.

San Benito is 11-18 on the season. A week before beginning district competition, the Lady ‘Hounds played at the Corpus Christi Pride of Texas Tournament.

Coach Moreno feels that the time away from the Valley and the competitors they faced did the Lady ‘Hounds good by helping them prepare for what has been a successful district run.

“Our season kind of turned around at the Christmas tournament; we played a pretty darn good Poth team, and we just played with tons of energy. They were bigger and a bit more athletic than we were, but that win spurned a belief that we could win big games,” Coach Moreno said. “We rallied off of that and came out strong in district, picking up wins versus Hanna and Los Fresnos.”

Coach Moreno felt the Lady ‘Hounds played Vets tightly in the third district game and played well against Harlingen at the beginning, but struggled as the game went on.

The top four district teams qualify for the postseason.

Meanwhile, the ladies’ male counterparts have lost three District 32-6A contests and will finish the first round of games Friday at Los Fresnos (2-1), which is in second place.

The ‘Hounds fell to the Brownsville Hanna Eagles on Tuesday, 52-41. Hanna earned its first district victory and is 1-2. Last Friday, SBHS lost to the district-leading Harlingen Cardinals, 63-44.

Harlingen is 4-0, and San Benito is 0-3.

San Benito is 7-19 this year.

The Rio Hondo Bobcats and Lady ’Cats were on opposite ends of the District 32-3A win-loss column Tuesday.

As the regular season nears its end, the Bobcats are playing for their basketball lives. If they aim to be one of the top four district teams, they need wins. This week at IDEA Riverview, their foes didn’t help matters, and the Bobcats lost 59-51.

Rio Hondo still has a winning 7-5 record, but district losses keep the team in fifth place. They play at Santa Rosa (10-2, second place) on Friday and then host Raymondville (7-5) at home next Tuesday.

The Lady ’Cats are handling hoops affairs like the defending champions they are. They are 13-0 in District 32-3A after defeating IDEA Riverview on Tuesday, 53-18.

Rio Hondo’s next opponent is the fourth-place Santa Rosa Lady Warriors (8-3) at home. They close out with third-place Raymondville (9-2) and host IDEA Sports Park (0-6) next week.

Rio Hondo remains No. 1 in the Class 3A statewide poll, per the Texas Girls’ Coaches Association.
