BROWNSVILLE, TX—The San Benito Greyhounds advanced to the Brownsville ISD Tournament last weekend, having played in three games – two against familiar foes.
The ’Hounds got a glimpse of what the Los Fresnos Falcons and the Harlingen Cardinals will bring this season, as they are paired with these and two other Brownsville teams in District 32-6A. Los Fresnos eventually won the tournament against the Brownsville Hanna Eagles, 61-33.
To advance, the Falcons also beat San Benito in the semi-final game, 83-64.
San Benito then fell in its tournament finale to Harlingen, 60-52.
So far in non-district play, San Benito is 2-8, while Los Fresnos is 14-2, Hanna is 13-4, and Harlingen is 11-4.
The ’Hounds’ lone tournament win was against the Port Isabel Tarpons, 83-70. It was San Benito’s highest point total for a game thus far this season.
San Benito entered the tournament off a 78-61 loss to the Edinburg North Cougars.
The ’Hounds played host to the Weslaco Panthers in a non-district game on Tuesday.
The San Benito Lady Greyhounds, meanwhile, are slowly moving closer to equalizing their season record as they are now 7-10 following their play at the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Tournament last weekend.
They started with a convincing win against the PSJA Southwest Lady Javelinas, 52-16, but lost to the Harlingen South Lady Hawks, 53-8. Two other teams the South defense faced during the tournament finished a game with fewer than 10 points.
However, San Benito rebounded with victories against the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons (44-16) and the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles (55-20). The Lady ’Hounds’ tournament final resulted in a loss to the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers (52-19).
San Benito played a home game Tuesday against the Weslaco Lady Panthers, a non-district opponent.
