Wrestlers place at La Joya

LA JOYA, TX—The San Benito High School wrestling program is off to an impressive start after each of the varsity teams earned high marks in recent tournaments.

The Lady Greyhounds placed second at the La Joya Palmview Tournament on Nov. 14.

Head Coach Kristen Longoria entered the team in six various weight divisions, in which the Lady ‘Hounds placed no lower than third.

Results were as follows: First place, Evelyn Balderas (115 lbs.) and Ruby Lucio (130 lbs.); Second place, Briana Castillo (110 lbs.), Shaila Sosa (140 lbs.), and Madison Castillo (155 lbs.); Third place, Deyanira Garcia (170 lbs.).

“I’m proud of the effort, toughness, and discipline each of the girls showed on the mat,” Coach Longoria said.

San Benito will next compete at the Thanksgiving Throwdown Tournament at Brownsville Veterans Memorial High School on Friday, Nov. 21, beginning at 9 a.m.

Before the month’s end, the girls will wrestle in another event, the Bear Down Invitational at PSJA High School on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

‘Hounds place at La Joya meet

On the boys’ side, San Benito earned third place at the La Joya Palmview Tournament.

Head Coach Juan Caballero had six athletes who placed in various weight divisions.

Their placements were as follows: First place: Damien Hernandez (126 lbs.), and Brandon Salinas (215 lbs.); Second place: Micha De Leon (120 lbs.); Third place: Uriah De Leon (106 lbs.), and Gabriel Lopez (143 lbs.); and fourth place: Roel Garcia (144 lbs.).

Coach Caballero said the team needs to build off this event and strive for success at the Brownsville and Pharr tournaments this month.
