A centuries-old tradition honoring St. Francis of Assisi will resume this week as All Saints Episcopal Church hosts its second annual Blessing of the Animals.
The celebration is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 499 N. Reagan St., with a rain date set for Oct. 18. Pets must be crated or leashed, and small treats will be offered while supplies last. The blessings will be led by Mother Stephia Sandhana.
“This will be our second anniversary of the blessing of the animals event,” said organizer Moises Ramirez.
“Last year being our first the attendance was small. The attendees were extremely appreciative of the event because people are so attached to their pets, and it gives them a chance to bond with other pet lovers.”
Founded in the early 1900s, All Saints Episcopal Church is recognized as one of the Valley’s oldest Episcopal congregations. The church has long been known for its active role in community life, blending worship with outreach efforts. From hosting neighborhood gatherings to honoring first responders earlier this summer with a special lunch, the church continues to focus on connection and service as part of its mission.
The Blessing of the Animals embodies the same spirit of outreach, welcoming the community and including the pets many families consider part of their households. The tradition of blessing animals originates from the observances of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, whose feast day is celebrated each October.
“People can participate by calling me,” Ramirez said. He added that the event offers simple ways for community members to join in, whether by helping with hospitality or sharing stories with other pet owners.
“The attendees were extremely appreciative of the event because people are so attached to their pets,” Ramirez said. “And it gives them a chance to bond with other pet lovers.”
