LAREDO, TX—The San Benito Greyhounds are still looking for their first victory of the season after losing their second road game of the year last week, this time to the Laredo United Longhorns, 31-10.
The margin of victory against a ‘Hounds’ foe was less this time around as San Benito had suffered losses against P-SJ-A North (48-14) and Austin Westlake (66-0) the previous two Friday nights.
Once again, much like a week earlier, the ‘Hounds’ defense looked good early on, but couldn’t sustain their performance throughout the three other quarters.
Westlake only had a 7-0 lead after one quarter of play in Week 2 at Bobby Morrow Stadium. Against United, San Benito had a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.
The Laredo school then exploded with 21 unanswered points going into halftime.
The passing game against the ‘Hounds was too much, as it allowed almost 300 yards to two different quarterbacks.
In the second half, United took a 31-3 lead before San Benito got a score, which came in the form of a 51-yard pass.
Offensively, the ‘Hounds allowed three sacks and fumbled once.
The ‘Hounds’ first score came with 23 seconds remaining in the opening quarter when kicker Francisco Barrientos nailed a 34-yard field goal. The scoring drive was highlighted by junior quarterback Albert Gonzalez’s 31-yard gain to the United 22-yard line.
San Benito’s second scoring drive came at the 3:18 mark of the fourth quarter when Gonzalez connected with wide receiver Nelson Ratliff.
The freshman wide receiver was able to shake off a United cornerback on a short pass and run untouched the rest of the way for a long gain.
Much of San Benito’s offense will focus on Gonzalez’s running ability, as he was involved in various designed plays.
Last season, United defeated San Benito, 28-0.
The ‘Hounds will play their next game during their Homecoming event on Friday, starting at 7 p.m. against Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon.
San Benito, unfortunately, is used to being winless nearly a month into non-district play in consecutive years.
Last year, they lost 28-21 to the same Monterrey, Mexico squad after giving up a late touchdown scoring pass.
