SHARYLAND, TX —The San Benito Lady Greyhounds competed in their second and final tournament this season.
During the Sharyland ISD Invitational, the Lady ’Hounds played in five matches during the weekend, and for their efforts garnered a second-place finish in the tournament’s Silver Bracket.
Host Sharyland Pioneer won the tournament, and second in the Gold Bracket was Corpus Christi Calallen.
In fact, it was Calallen that San Benito began tournament play against, losing 17-25, 13-25, followed by a loss to Brownsville Rivera, 16-25, 18-25.
That paved the way for the team to play in the Silver Bracket, where the Lady ’Hounds defeated Sharyland JV and Donna High in two sets each.
Their lone loss came against Harlingen in a three-set thriller, 25-21, 8-25, 12-15.
San Benito Head Coach Ruby Medina said four players combined to earn 32 kills, 15 aces, and 11 blocks.
The tournament’s “outstanding players” included Genesis Mesa, Kalysta Olivares, Annalise Rodriguez, and Hayden Rodriguez.
“Additionally, the team voted for the superlative awards. Hayden Rodriguez won Best Offense, Jayla Delgado won Best Defense, and Genesis Mesa won Best Spirited Award,” Medina said.
The Lady ’Hounds still have several matches to play before they begin District 32-6A play at Brownsville Hanna on Sept. 23.
On Tuesday, in their second match of the season at nearby Veterans Memorial Academy, the Lady ’Hounds lost in three sets to the PSJA Lady Bears, 16-25, 25-20, 14-25.
The Lady ’Hounds really showed their mettle in the second set. They scored four consecutive points to take a 10-4 lead, forcing PSJA to call the first of two timeouts in the set.
The Lady Bears needed to regroup once again when they trailed later, 19-12, with consecutive points coming off a Kalista Olivares block and Annalise Rodriguez’s thunderous kill.
The Lady Bears got as close as three points (18-21) late before Coach Medina called a timeout.
San Benito plays next week, Sept. 9, at home against Weslaco. The Lady ’Hounds have been playing their home matches at VMA while their San Benito High School gymnasium floor is being redone.
They will continue pre-district competition with an overall 9-11 record.
