With the varsity team yet to be filled, the San Benito High School girls’ cross country team has competed at the junior varsity and freshman levels.
Under Head Coach Sonia White, the runners will be partaking in their second event this Saturday, this time in the 51st annual Harlingen Invitational.
“I am still trying to get girls to come out and run cross country. I have three freshmen and four sophomores,” White said. “Last week at the Friday Night Lights Invitational in McAllen, we ran the girls in the freshmen and JV divisions.”
Coach White said there were 250 runners in the JV event and 83 in the freshman race, both of which were two miles.
The top SBHS runner in the JV event was Alexia Delgado, who finished 103rd with a time of 14:28.
The rest of the runners finished as follows: Madisann Murillo (113) with a time of 14:37; Rebecca Sanchez (214) with a time of 16:46.3; and Lexus Gonzalez (215) with a time of 16:46.8.
The top freshman runner for SBHS was Andrea Villarreal, who finished 25th with a time of 14:31.
Rounding out the Lady Greyhounds were Sophia Villafranca (54th) with a time of 15:54; and Brunette Machuca (67th) with a time of 16:55.
This weekend, Harlingen South and Harlingen High will host their annual run at the Harlingen Sports Complex, 3139 Wilson Road, in Harlingen.
The schedule is as follows: Rolling begins at 8 a.m.
Varsity Girls (5K), medals for top 20 finishers; varsity boys (5K), medals for top 20 finishers; JV boys (5K) Medals for top 15 finishers; JV girls (2 miles), medals for top 15 finishers; 9th-grade girls and boys (2 miles) medals for top 10 finishers.
A team plaque will be awarded to the top team in varsity, JV, and freshman divisions.
