HARLINGEN, TX —In preparation for the upcoming football season, some of the incoming seniors of the San Benito Greyhounds’ varsity team joined the San Benito Quarterback Booster Club for the first time in raising money that will fund countless activities that correlate with their beloved sport.

The two-day event at Jason’s Deli on July 30-31 was set up for supporters to order their food, and when they mentioned the quarterback club, a percentage of the money went to the club.

It’s a process that two seniors-to-be, Michael Escobedo and Eddie Cuevas, are familiar with.“We’re here to help because it’s the least we can do to support our San Benito Quarterback Booster Club, because the support we receive from them is essential,” said Munoz, who played center guard for the varsity team last season.

“All the extra things that come with our football activities throughout the season come from them, and events like this help to raise those monies.”

Having just completed his junior year at San Benito High School, and academics set to begin Monday, Aug. 11, Cuevas said his final year is “a major step up.”

We’re being seen as leaders and must set an example,” said Cuevas, who played defensive end/nose tackle. “I’m excited to be here with other players to support the club.”

As guests entered the restaurant, booster club President Monica Anaya welcomed them. Vice President Elaine Hernandez sat alongside her, reminding them to mention the club when placing an order.

“We have the best fans in the Valley, and it was great seeing them come to support our club,” Anaya said.
The club will continue to accept members at the “Meet the Greyhounds” event slated for Thursday, Aug. 13, at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

The Greyhounds, led by longtime Head Coach Dan Gomez, will have two away scrimmages at Corpus Christi when they take on the Carroll Tigers on Friday, Aug. 15, and at Rio Grande City when they take on the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs on Thursday, Aug. 21.

“Everything that we do will be challenging in some way, but we’re looking forward to it with this being our senior season,” Cuevas said.

Seniors-to-be, cornerback safety Alexander Munoz and center guard Juan Abrego joined the two.
