RIO HONDO, TX —The Bridge Church is preparing to host its annual Back to School Prayer Walk on August 9, a tradition that has quietly woven itself into the fabric of the community over the past eight years.
“We do this annually just before the first day of school,” said Dr. Danny Anderson, senior pastor of The Bridge Church. Since taking leadership eight years ago, he has seen the event grow from a large gathering before the pandemic to a steadily increasing attendance in recent years.
The walk begins at The Bridge Church parking lot, then moves to the administrative building, the elementary school, Head Start, and daycare, before participants return to the church to get in vehicles for the journey to the middle and high schools. At each stop, a designated individual offers a prayer for that location. Anderson explained, “It’s always a blessing to be able to pray at each school and the Admin Building.”
Everyone in the community is welcome. Churches receive direct invitations, while announcements are posted on various Facebook pages and the Bridge Outdoor Media Board. The presence of walkers has drawn positive attention. Anderson said the community response has been encouraging: “The community seems excited to see us out walking, and some will join us along the way. Any person working in the schools is welcome to join us in our time of prayer.”
The event, Anderson believes, plays a vital role in setting the tone for the new school year. He stated, “I believe public prayer is vital to the establishment of the upcoming year, and it encourages others to consider praying regularly for the schools.” Beyond the walk itself, The Bridge Church offers ongoing support to students and educators. “We offer our help and support in all aspects of the Rio Hondo Schools,” Anderson said.
Participants in the prayer walk are encouraged to carry the spirit of the event forward. Anderson expressed his hope that they take away “a true desire to continue to pray and to do all possible in making our schools positive, safe, and centers of learning.”
The church invites everyone in the area to join in the walk and to engage throughout the year. “We encourage people from the area to join us for the event and throughout the year,” he said.
The Bridge Church’s Back to School Prayer Walk is set to take place on August 9, marking another chapter in a growing community effort to support local schools through faith and unity.
