The community is invited to “talk football” months before the high school gridiron season when the San Benito Quarterback Booster Club hosts an inaugural spring event called “Fan Night.”

According to organizers, the event, slated for May 20, is an opportunity to meet San Benito High School student athletes who are expected to try out for the Greyhounds’ varsity team ahead of the 2025 football season, which commences in August.

Club members and San Benito CISD Athletics Director Dan Gomez discussed the idea of having this event before the school year ended.

Club President Monica Anaya said the meet and greet serves various purposes.

“It’s important that we promote club membership so that we can support the football program through the season. The athletes and trainers work very hard, year-round,” Anaya said. “The club is able to show support throughout the year, such as game day meals, Saturday morning meals, parents’ night, decorations in the community for events such as homecoming and the Battle of the Arroyo (versus Harlingen).”

The club showcases its activities and member support on social media, including its Facebook page.

Presently, the club has 20 members. As the football season nears, the club customarily increases its membership base when family members have a relative on the football team.

Club membership dues are $20 for the year.

Members are also needed to volunteer for the aforementioned activities in the stadium concessions stands during the football season.

“This Fan Night event will create an opportunity for players and coaches to connect with the community,” Anaya said. “These positive interactions help boost team morale and promote a positive atmosphere that motivates players to perform at their best. The athletes also serve as role models to inspire the youth in our community.”

Anaya became club president in January during a club meeting. Among the club officers are: Vice President, Elaine Hernandez; Treasurer, Yadira Abrego; and Secretary, Tommy Ramirez.

Anaya said the club is conducting monthly meetings on the last Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at SBHS Portable Room located next to the Greyhound Sports Complex. The meetings are open to the public.

This month’s meeting is being held at SB Wings on Wednesday, May 28 at 6 p.m. On the agenda is the current drawing for the club’s fundraising raffle, Anaya said.

Tickets are currently being sold by football players and/or their families for $30 ea.

First prize is a weekend trip to South Padre Island, second prize and RTIC 30-can soft cooler, and third prize is an Ozark Trail multipurpose beach wagon and two folding camp chairs.

The raffle is being sponsored by Tri-Country Healthcare, Montana Dental Esthetics, and Chuy’s Custom Sports.

Raffle tickets are being collected on May 26.

For the Fan Night event, athletes and their coaches will be in the San Benito High School Sports Complex and Multipurpose Facility next to Bobby Morrow Stadium beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.

Light refreshments are being served at the event. The ‘Hounds’ football schedule are being made available as will the opportunity for guests to register for club membership.
