The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Baseball players will play in a three-game series against the Weslaco Panthers as both squads begin their postseason run at a state title.

The Class 6A bi-district matchup pits the ‘Hounds, who finished fourth out of District 32-6A with a 3-5 mark, against the Panthers, who finished third with a mark of 6-4 out of District 31-6A.

Overall, Weslaco enters the postseason with a 17-9-1 record, and San Benito, respectively, at 11-14.
Game 1 was played Thursday in Weslaco. Game 2 will be played at San Benito on Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in San Benito.

The ‘Hounds’ district finale came in the form of a 10-2 loss to the Harlingen Cardinals (4-4 record, second in district, 13-13 overall) at home.

The ‘Hounds earned the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning when Mando Garcia drove in Justin Montemayor from third base.

Harlingen then took a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Mauro Arizpe hit a single to drive in San Benito’s final run.

San Benito then trailed, 5-2, before the game was out of reach.

To prepare for its playoff run, San Benito played a follow-up warm-up game against the Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots.

The game went well for the ‘Hounds in defeating the Patriots, 6-1.

San Benito had one run in the bottom first inning, added four more runs in the second. When Veterans Memorial added a run in the fifth, the game appeared out of reach thanks to a committee of ‘Hounds pitchers that combined to allow five hits.

Arizpe didn’t pitch in the game after taking the mound against Harlingen.

He saw limited playing time as a hitter, but his teammates responded.
Among the players to earn an RBI were Montemayor, Garcia (2 hits), Aiden Barrera (2 hits), and Gabriel Covarrubias (2 hits).

The winner of the San Benito/Weslaco game will go against the victor of the Laredo United/Buda Johnson bi-district contest.
